The Theme – Gothic Era – the subculture

Thomso’14 shall mark the resurrection of the ‘Devil’ emerging like a Phoenix rising up from ashes of murdered passion and burnt desires. His roots intervene with those of IIT Roorkee deeply seated in the English Era – which nourished the sapling of our institute to reap what it is today. With the testimony of time, English era was marked by passage of ‘Gothic’ subculture, making us proudly reluctant to choose ‘Gothic Era – its subculture’ as the theme of this year. We invite you to hear the ‘devil’s symphony’ which has already impressed the primitives by the journey of time.

Our devil is not evil. He is the demon, the demon within us, shedding all the masquerades of tradition, unleashing the deepest fire, revealing itself.

Having said that, we are overwhelmed by your response to our motion teaser, so much that it ended being into fits of laughter. But well, we are glad we could draw smiles to your faces. Let me explain, what the motion poster was about. The Lion has always been symbolic to our institute and interwoven in our culture. The dragon entices you, on a fire of endeavor that’s unusual, tempting and sinisterly beautiful, to evolve from, tragedy to drama, tune to melody, hustle to jitter and custom to craze.

This year, lend your ear to the slowest murmurs within and release them most anguished yells.

Let your imagination elaborate on a vivid space, sweetly penetrating into a thousand hearts, casting a spell on each.

Let Thomso be the string, knitting broken fragments of forgotten dreams together in a lyrical harmony. Let Thomso be the spark, igniting devils of immense passion, slowly guiding them from the abyss of your soul to surface.

Let me inform you, do not skip our next blog, we have some insights and some good news coming in store for you. Stay tuned!

How it all began?

Official

So here it is, the official blog of Thomso or Thomso 2014 to be more precise.
Now we too were tired of finding fachhes (A ’fachha’ is a freshman in IIT lingo) to put yet another poster after a seemingly never ending lot and of course, spamming people’s notifications bar with endless posts shared on our own timeline from Thomso’s facebook page (considering you have ‘liked’ the page that it is, do that if you haven’t!) further more repeating the process passionately.
Well… Not Really. The process shall continue still, most likely ‘passionately’, owing to TOC members being the dedicated, hardworking creatures they are (Yes!). But we bring to you a standalone resource to keep track of all the tid-bits of info, gossips, rumours and happenings of Thomso 2014. Whoeee!
We intend the default type as a user friendly, easily-accessible, easily-comprehendible blog. And before you realize, we are in no mood to saturate this page with heavily-flooded news and polysyllabic words of all sorts. So while you WILL be updated on the major details if you follow our bakar, this does NOT replace the posters, notice bulletins and oh yes, the Thomso page itself. Keep checking them out.
Now, quite unsure of where to start and too reluctant of dragging its vivid history (which we would have to do eventually) let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
The annual cultural fest of University of Roorkee was previously known as ‘Tarang’. In 1982, after a general consent to alter the coinage and an open competition, the term ‘Thomso’ was coined after Sir James Thomason, the founder of Thomason College of Civil Engineering (currently IIT Roorkee). Encompassing a lavish cultural heritage, Thomso has witnessed concerts by several celebrated personalities since then – Farhan Akhtar, Sonu Nigaam, Pankaj Udhaas, Juggy D. etc.
Thomso has also hosted a number of Indian Rock and Fusion bands like Indian Ocean, Euphoria, Jal – The Band and international bands like Benea Reach from Norway. Apart from this, it has also been a launchpad for many budding rock bands like Zero, Parikrama and Aagman.
The Fashion Pronite ‘Vogue’ has been glorified by noted actresses like Sushmita Sen and Udita Goswami.
Besides this, ‘Kavi Sammelan’ named as ‘Thahake’ has hosted popular comedians like Kumar Vishwas and Ahsaan Qureshi.
Sigh!
We guess now you get the gravity of the glamour of this grand extravaganza (Alliteration! Yipeee :D).
Get an insight into the current scenario of TOC and learn what this year’s theme ‘Devil’s Symphony’ has to speak, in our upcoming blog.
